Tight end Zach Ertz re-signing with Commanders, source says

Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz is re-signing with the Washington Commanders, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday.

The deal is for one year and worth $6.25 million with a maximum value of $9 million, the source said.

Ertz, who ranks sixth on the all-time receptions list for tight ends with 775, underwent a career resurgence last season, his first with the Commanders.

He caught 66 passes for 654 yards and seven touchdowns — his most scoring receptions since he had eight in 2018 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished with the fifth-most receptions among tight ends last season and was fourth in touchdown catches.

Ertz, 34, was a favorite target of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, especially on third or fourth down and in the red zone. All of Ertz’s touchdown receptions occurred in the red zone, and he was fourth among tight ends with 13 catches inside the 20-yard line. Including the postseason, Ertz caught 26 passes on third or fourth down — second most behind the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce.

Before 2024, Ertz spent two injury-shortened seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, missing a combined 17 games. Ertz spent his first eight-plus seasons with Philadelphia, where he set the single-season reception record for tight ends with 116 in 2018. He was voted to three Pro Bowl teams with the Eagles, who traded him to Arizona on Oct. 15, 2021.

Ertz needs 34 receptions to pass Shannon Sharpe and move into fifth among tight ends on the career receptions list.

ESPN’s John Keim contributed to this report.
