Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid Mattress Review 2025: An American-Made Bed From a Reputable Brand, Put to the Test

The beds from Wolf Mattress recently came across our radar, which is hard to believe since the brand has been around since 1873. For generations, the hardworking folks at this company have strived to make handcrafted mattresses right here in the US. They make four standout choices for the average sleeper, which are also relatively affordable, considering each bed’s level of quality.

Over here at CNET Home, we’ve tested the 12-Inch Hybrid medium firm model, which is essentially Wolf’s flagship bed. It’s a pretty straightforward coil mattress, but certain things about it set it apart from other online beds. In this review, I’ll cover everything you need to know about this option, including who exactly it’ll work best for.

First impressions of the Wolf 12-inch Hybrid mattress

This mattress arrived at our office the same way as countless others. It was shipped to us for free and arrived inside a tall cardboard box. To set it up, all I had to do was drag it into the bedroom, dump out the contents, rip off the plastic and watch as the bed unfurled and inflated. Since the bed has support coils, it took shape a bit quicker than other mattresses.

Right out of the box, my first impression of the mattress was that it looked really patriotic. The American flag emblazoned on the tag and the red, white and blue coloration of the bed itself all gave me the impression that Wolf as a company takes pride in being a US-based brand — which is awesome; I love testing American-sourced mattresses. It had a nice look, but what does that matter if the feel of the bed is off, right? So, I hopped on to get a sense of how the bed performs in terms of overall comfort.

What does the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid mattress feel like?

When I lay down on this mattress, I immediately thought it had a neutral hybrid feel. Similar to other popular hybrid beds online, like the Serta Classic or the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, this bed presents a generally accommodating level of comfort that should work for just about anyone. Even though this bed is advertised as a memory foam hybrid, its memory foam just adds a bit of pressure relief to the sleeping surface — it definitely doesn’t have a viscous, sink-in quality like a Tempur-Pedic mattress. 

Getting a hybrid bed with a neutral feel is always a safe choice for most sleepers. If you don’t exactly know what you’d prefer feel-wise in your next bed, you shouldn’t feel a bed like this to be off-putting in any way. If you prefer a more specific type of mattress, like dense memory foam options, this bed doesn’t quite fit that bill. However, look no further if you just want a cozy hybrid bed. The coils provide all body types with plenty of support, while the quilted cover offers plenty of neutral cushion on top. 

How firm is the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid mattress?

As the name implies, this Wolf mattress is indeed around a proper medium-firm on our scale. This firmer, more supportive profile makes the bed ideal for back, stomach and some combination sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper who prefers a much firmer style of mattress, it could also work for that specific preference.

Generally, side sleepers usually prefer softer options to offer enhanced pressure relief to their shoulders and hips. If you’re in the market for that type of option, the brand has a few other plush mattress models to consider. The 13-Inch Hybrid Plush or the 14-Inch Hybrid Plush Pillow Top should cater to the needs of strict side sleepers a bit more — if you want a firm bed, though, 

For years, we’ve ranked mattress firmness from a subjective perspective, but we now have a machine called the Mattress Smasher 9000 that objectively tests how soft or firm a mattress is. After pressing into the bed with a precise pressure gauge, it gave the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid a score of 6.6 out of 10 — slightly softer than I initially thought.

This hybrid bed has a combination of coils for support and various foams for comfort. It’s around 12 inches thick and made up of the following materials:

1. On the bottom is a thin layer of base foam, topped with the bed’s main support system of individually wrapped coils.
2. Then you’ve got a high-density foam that acts as a transition layer between the coils, so you don’t feel them as much.
3. Next is a layer of gel memory foam, which acts as another transition layer and adds some pressure relief to the bed. 
4. Then there’s a cooling gel memory foam layer to give the bed some more pressure relief towards the actual sleeping surface.
5. Pulling everything together is a stretch knit cover with cooling technology to help regulate your sleeping temperature at night. I think it’s pretty noticeable — especially being more of a hot sleeper myself.

Motion isolation

This mattress deadens an average amount of cross-mattress movement, especially for a hybrid bed. Since the coils are wrapped and individually siloed, they help the mattress transfer less motion from side to side, but not as much as something like a dense memory foam option. If motion isolation is a top priority when it comes to you or your partner’s next bed, I’d definitely consider a memory foam mattress — those usually perform the best in this regard.

Edge-to-edge support

This mattress has a reinforced edge system, and seems to have a sturdy perimeter. It has strong edges that don’t overly sag under pressure. If you tend to sleep close to the edges of a mattress at night, this mattress should be able to support you along its outer rims — and it goes without saying, no one should be falling off.

Temperature

This bed has a cooling cover with a noticeable cooling quality. This cover should help you sleep on the cooler side if not temperature-neutral. Durability

Since this is a hybrid bed that has coils for support, it should to be more durable than your standard, all-foam mattress found online. Its steel coils should provide lots of support and durability for all body types: small, medium and even larger people. Who is the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid mattress best for?

While anyone could get by sleeping on this mattress, the Wolf 12-|nch Hybrid will most likely appeal to a select group of sleepers. Here’s who I think will love this bed.

Sleeping position

Since it’s around a medium-firm, this bed should mainly work best for primary back and stomach sleepers. If you’re a combination sleeper who prefers a firmer sleeping surface, it could also work well for that preference. The mattress itself provides more support and rigidity on top instead of pressure relief, which could be a drawback for side sleepers and combination sleepers who are looking for a softer bed.

If you want an especially soft mattress, this might not be the most suitable bed for you. Wolf makes other plush mattress offerings, however, that could fit the bill for strict side sleepers. Sadly, I found particular bed too firm to recommend if that’s your preference.

Body type

As mentioned, the construction of this bed makes it best at supporting all body types, including heavier people. If you’re an average-sized person, or even someone who’s on the smaller side, you should find it supportive, but you could save more money by going the route of an all-foam bed — coil beds can be overkill for more petite people.

Speaking of price, this bed is surprisingly affordable, given its overall level of quality. We’d say this pricing is only the level of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, another comparable hybrid mattress. I’m currently writing this around a major sale, so the bed’s pricing could be different in the future. Still, not half bad for a quality, handcrafted hybrid bed.

Wolf backs its mattresses with some nice policies. Its beds ship to you for completely free, and once in your possession, you get a 101-night trial period to try them at home risk-free. If you happen not to like your Wolf mattress within that time frame, you can return it for free. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a lifetime limited warranty. 

How does the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid mattress compare to other mattresses? 

Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Signature

This mattress is quite similar to the Brooklyn Bedding Signature in many different ways. It’s also a quality, American-made hybrid bed with a neutral feel. Unlike the Wolf mattress, though, it’s available in three different firmnesses rather than just one. Additionally, the Signature is more affordable after discount year-round and you get a bit longer to test it out at home before you either have to return or keep it. Either way, you’re getting a solid bed from a reputable brand.

Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid vs. Serta Classic

This comparison is tricky since these two beds are similar. Both are neutral hybrid options, but the Serta Classic is available with upgrades and a few firmness levels. The “Medium” version of the Enhanced Serta Classic is slightly softer than the Wolf mattress I tested. One noticeable difference comes down to pricing. The Serta Classic is much more affordable than the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid, which is still offered at a relatively low-value proposition. If your decision between the two comes down to cooling, the Wolf 12-Inch Hybrid is the chillier pick.

The final verdict

This mattress surprised me. It’s a quality bed that’s made to a higher standard than most, and it shows. If you just want a neutral hybrid bed with a firmer profile, you like the sound of that cooling cover, and you want an American-sourced product, you can’t go wrong with this option. Plus, you’re backed by nice policies if you decide that it’s not the bed of your dreams.
